Kong Wenge, also called China, is a character from the manga series Ping Pong (1996-1997), which follows childhood friends Peco and Smile as they compete in a national table tennis tournament. Kong is a proficient Chinese player who was dropped by his team and came to Japan to prove himself to them. He also appears in the 2014 anime adaptation, Ping Pong The Animation.
I've been into sports lately, and Ping Pong's captivating animation style interested me. It's not similar to other sports anime, where there is a lot of focus on making the sport look cool with cool powerups and whatnot. In Ping Pong, the fluid animation style and framing, which sets the scene like manga panels, does most of the work for 'cool factor'. There is also a lot of emphasis of interpersonal and intrapersonal characterization, which I enjoy. I'm only on episode 4, and so far Kong is my favorite character. I love characters who are cocky and confident externally to hide their fears, vulnerabilities and insecurities. He's also very cute. I love how hard he works.
