Born to Helena Santos, a Brazilian housekeeper living in Miami, Rafael was raised mostly by his more well-established aunts and cousins. He's always had a strong attachement to his mother, and by extension, to her home country. He's very interested the Brazilian cultural output and the customs there. His mother, however, having left Brazil in her 20's with a weak formal education, couldn't tell him much. Rafael's father, Fernando, was a rich man who was having an affair with Helena and left his wife and kids in Brazil to go with her to America. As soon as Rafael was born however, he disappeared. Rafael doesn't care for him.

Rafael moved out of his mother's home at 18. He begann dating Hannah, a high school classmate, and the two moved to Fairwater, Connecticut, where she wanted to pursue college, while he went to work in a Phillips factory. As they spent more time together, Rafael picked up a drinking habit, and grew lazier and more aggressive towards Hannah. She broke up with him and kicked him out of their home. Unable to move back to Florida, Rafael stayed at his friends' homes until he met Hailey, a troubled girl living off of welfare after her parents' death in an accident that left her disabled. The two began dating within months of meeting each other and soon, Rafael moved in with her. He got fired from his job, and the two were living off solely Hailey's disability paychecks and what little money Rafael had saved up.

Rafael was very possessive and controlling of Hailey, which she didn't like, but given he was her only caretaker, she put up with it anyway. With Rafael's drinking habit worsening his behavior, Hailey secretly began seeking other connections online. Upon discovering this, Rafael stabbed her 45 times. Her screams quickly alerted the neighbors, who called the police. Rafael was arrested and Hailey was sent to the hospital. She survived, albeit severely more impaired now. Rafael showed no remorse in trial. He was sent to prison, where he became known for preying on younger inmates by offering them "protection", which is really just an exclusive pass to abuse them. This earned him the nickname Papa-Anjo, which is a Brazilian term equivalent to "cradle snatcher", literally meaning "angel eater".
