Colt Maddison is an ostracized and lonely high school student living in Fairwater, CT. He is extremely bitter and resentful of those around him, holding extremely prejudiced views mostly aligned with alt-right politics.

Colt suffers from severe anorexia and struggles with suicidal and homicidal ideation. He has no friends in real life; the only people he talks to are online friends with whom he comes together to harrass or make fun of someone they all collectively dislike. He goes by the name Kolya on the internet and tries very hard to give people the impression he is Russian from his pictures, interests and the way he presents himself online. When not engaging maliciously with a third party, Colt's friends take turns teasing, embarrassing and berating one another. Colt is a frequent victim of this, more so than the others, as they see him as an easy target.

Much like every other environment he is in, Colt's home life is toxic and abusive, with his mother out of the picture and his father a violent alcoholic. He has a younger sister aged 11, whom their father sexually abuses. Colt, on the other hand, ends up beaten for his and his sister's slip-ups, which in turn makes him resent her. He is rarely affectionate or willing to engage with her at all.

Colt's interests include school shootings, namely Columbine and subsequent copycats and Sandy Hook, gore, shock content and first-person shooter games. He is not interested in dating or sex, mostly because his anorexia nullifies his sex drive almost completely, but also because he hates women too much to even consider speaking amicably to one. He started smoking at age 16, buying packs from older classmates who were willing to overlook his reputation so long as they got money from him. His favorite brand is Lucky Strike.

The only person in Colt's life who brings him any sort of comfort is Danny, an older man in his early 40's who lives a few towns away. Though their relationship is mostly online, Danny eventually drives to Fairwater to see Colt. They are not dating, despite the obvious sexual tension between them. As far as Danny or Colt will admit, they are friends and nothing more.

In the year of his graduation, Colt, with no perspective of a future or even any idea of what he'd do after high school, learned of Vashti Alexander, a student from a different school in his city in a very similar situation to him, who had been arrested after shooting up his school. This motivated Colt to do the same; he took his father's hunting and home defense guns, (generation I compact model Ruger American Rifle and SIG Sauer Mosquito semi-automatic pistol) first killing his father and then driving to his school, where he managed to kill 6 people and injure 21 more, most of them students. He barricaded himself in a classroom and shot himself before the police could apprehend him.
